The main topic of all of my texts is banality. This banality that brings us all together, which makes us look the same, levels hierarchies. Bringing closer art and dental surgery, art and Swedish massage, art and World Debt, World Debt and plumbing, plumbing and well-being, well-being and Formula 1, Formula 1 and extremists.

To catch the audience by talking about love, abstraction and landscape, retain them with concepts, tenderness, morals, politics; let them leave with impulses, privileges, daily facts.

Gilles Furtwängler develops work based on communication. All the elements of his work tend towards an objective and abstract communication; ironic or moralist, definitely poetic. His mediums are words, painting, and graphic design. The basis for the texts and words he uses is a mix of personal writings and found phrases. The artist is currently very interested in stealing phrases and words in the discussions he shares and overhears.

At DuflonRacz, the artist presents a series of new text-paintings in acrylic paint, rooibos and hibiscus tea on cotton paper.

Gilles Furtwängler (*1982) lives and works in Lausanne, Switzerland and Johannesburg, South Africa. Besides various exhibition and readings in Switzerland and internationally, the artist has received several important awards, including a Prolitteris encouragement grant in 2013 and a Swiss Art Award in 2015. This is his second solo show at DuflonRacz following a first presentation of his work at Project Links in 2008. We have since showed his work repeatedly as part of the collective Makrout Unité. In Geneva, he is represented by Skopia gallery, who have kindly worked with us for this show.

In Gilles Furtwängler’s künstlerischen Arbeiten dreht sich alles um die Kommunikation, für die er eine Form der abstrakten, objektiven und immer auch poetischen Darstellung sucht. Seine Medien sind das Wort, die Malerei und die Grafik: Er malt (selbst geschriebene oder aufgefundene) Textfragmente mit Acryl und Tee auf Baumwollpapier, verführt die Betrachter mit sinnlichen Worten, Farben und Abstraktion, hält ihre Aufmerksamkeit mit Konzepten, Moral, Politik – immer mit einem Auge auf die Banalität der Sprache, des Alltags und der Kunst.

Gilles Furtwängler (*1982) lebt und arbeitet in Lausanne und in Johannesburg, Südafrika. Nebst diversen Ausstellungen und Lesungen in der Schweiz und international, hat der Künstler auch diverse Preise erhalten, darunter 2013 den Förderpreis von ProLitteris und 2015 einen Swiss Art Award. Dies ist seine zweite Einzelausstellung bei DuflonRacz seit einer frühen Präsentation im Projekt Links 2008. Dazwischen waren seine Arbeiten mehrmals im Rahmen des Kollektivs Makrout Unité bei uns zu sehen. In Genf wird er von der Galerie Skopia vertreten.
