Im Raum Links beginnt das Projekt SIMPLE TOOLS. Eine Serie von Ausstellungen untersucht den zwiespältigen Begriff der «Simplizität» in Bezug auf Instrumente des Kunstschaffens. Wann gilt etwas als gewinnend schlicht oder sinnvoll reduziert, wann als einfältig, naiv oder gar idiotisch? Wo verlaufen die Grenzen zwischen diesen Kategorien und Werturteilen?
Den Anfang machen die beiden jungen Berner Künstlerinnen Laura Grubenmann und Nina Rieben. Ausgehend vom Begriff der “paradoxen Intention” - eine psychotherapeutische Methode die dazu anleitet, neurotische Verhaltensweisen (so zB die Angst vor der Angst) mit dem Ziel ihrer Überwindung absichtlich auszuüben - untersuchen sie den Raum auf Unsicherheiten und Gefahrenzonen. Kann man diesen mit einfachen oder paradox übersteigerten Lösungen begegnen?

The project space /Links/ hosts the first part of the project SIMPLE TOOLS. A series of exhibitions as well as an ongoing process of research involving exchange between various artists examines the ambiguous notion of «simplicity» in relation to the tools of art making. Simplicity may imply clarity, logic and elegance, as well naivety and idiocy. Are simple and complex always opposites, and where are the boundaries between these categories and value judgments?
The first exhibition is a collaboration between two young artists from Bern, Laura Grubenmann and Nina Rieben, who playfully explore some of the contradictions suggested by the project. In psychotherapy, "paradox intention" is a deliberate practice of neurotic habit or thought in order to identify and overcome it. For patients with severe anxiety disorders, intensifying their emotional state may paradoxically help them to understand the irrationality of the emotional reaction. The artists use the term as a conceptual framework for their investigation of the gallery space as a zone of potential anxiety-inducing dangers, places that feed our narratives of insecurity and emotional panic. Can these zones be identified and secured by simple means, which seems to be the logic of everyday security systems such as burglar alarms and power sockets? And where do these systems themselves become sources of anxiety, multiplying and exacerbating our fears through the imagination of worst case scenarios?
